UH Racing Launch!

As you may have noticed I have recently finished the Bachelors portion of my Automotive Engineering with Motorsport degree. However, this does not mean that I am sitting out in the sun all day, waiting for my Masters degree to begin in September. No. I am in the Formula Student lab at the University of Hertfordshire, making the finishing touches to UH19.

Two weeks ago today, UH Racing launched their 19th combustion powered car (UH19). Launch was a terrific opportunity to show off the car to our sponsors, lectures and parents. But more importantly, launch was a great feat for many members of the team. The sheer determination and keen eye for detail was clear to see, as was the admiration of the teams’ supporters. But behind the scenes, only the team members, our faculty leader and technicians knew how much blood, sweat and tears went into building the car (literally - I actually cut my finger open with a scalpel!).

At launch, while I stood looking over the car with my Mum at my side, I felt a strong sense of achievement come over me. And as I looked down at the bodywork I thought “that’s my work”. Not all of it, of course there were others there who had designed it, and helped with the manufacture. But after an intensive week of sanding moulds, laying up carbon fibre and fitting bodywork before it was painted, I could finally let out a great sigh of relief; for now at least. One of my favourite parts of the body work was the cowling, and seeing the louvres so well defined was magnificent; and although I knew the bodywork all had to come back off after, and some small tweaks still needed to be made, I was ecstatic.

I would like to thank my brother Mathew for his support in composite work in the past, as without the knowledge he had already passed down to me, my part in the manufacture of the bodywork would not have been possible. Hopefully the knowledge that I have learnt so far, will enable me to manufacture even greater composite parts in the future!
UH Racing will be competing at Formula Student UK and Formula Student Germany in July and August respectively, any support given to the team is gratefully received. If you would like to see more information regarding UH Racing, you can connect with them on their:
