Learn To Win!!!

As Formula Student UK draws even closer, more and more testing is being carried out by UH Racing in preparation.

I was one of the lucky ten team members chosen to visit HORIBA MIRA on 28th June for the IMechE Learn To Win event. Learn To Win is an official Formula Student test day in which many other universities, mainly from around the UK take part. It is also great opportunity to eye up the competition for both UK and Germany, and to get a free bacon sandwich!

My role for the day was pretty simple – pit crew, but for anyone who knows me, they are aware that this is one of my favourite things to do. I love getting my hands dirty, turning spanners and getting the car ready for its next session.

Following a very tiring start at 4am, after packing the van, practicing the business presentation and just a few hours sleep; the whole day ran fairly smoothly. The team sailed through the noise test and brake test as well as performing very well at acceleration, giving a time of just 3.744s to complete the acceleration course! We even managed to get in a few laps of the sprint track before the typical British summer rain began to fall. This made the endurance event even more interesting. Nonetheless we still completed the full 10 laps of the endurance, including a driver change.

Throughout the day many team members, including myself had interesting conversations with visitors to the event. This included an interview that I was asked to do by GKN PLC, where I told them about the team and my outlook on Formula Student and then took them around UH19, showing them some of the key details of this years’ car.
